TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

My focus in the classroom is on fostering community. As a veteran, I witnessed what the power of community could accomplish, and in the classroom it is the most important ingredient for a student’s growth. Through traditional ensemble-building games, short devised performances, and Viewpoints, I create an environment where everyone is invested in the process of group creation instead of product. This emphasis on community, physical freedom, and imagination creates a brave space that fosters a student’s growth. This space empowers them to take risks, make mistakes, and receive constructive criticism from me and from their peers, knowing it comes from a place of care and security. The product is a classroom where students can develop as actors and shift their perspectives from the student to the artist.
